Why do you use this answer service rather than your local library’s reference librarian?

A lot of libraries have email and/or IM help, though, so you can get help without actually going to the library. You can also call them on the phone. As a library science student, I wanted to chime in that not all of us fit the stereotype of librarians – we’re helpful and friendly!

A lot of rural areas don’t have reference librarians. This also offers the personal aspect of other people’s insights, experiences and feelings.

its faster to type than it is to get in your car, drive 5 miles to the local library and search 7000 sq ft of wall to wall books.

I think that it depends on the kind of information that I am seeking. This forum lends itself to obtaining opinion, personal preference and to some less formal information sources that wouldn’t necessarily be available from a reference librarian (or a library, for that matter). I might also ask a question here when I want to get an idea of what information may be out there or how much of an issue something is to others.

I would ask a reference librarian (or do a library search myself) when I want more academic information, do indepth research, or make sure that I have scientific information.

I use both. For popular culture and entertainment types of questions I use Yahoo Answers. For academic and reference questions that require authoritative answers I use my local library.
