I’m thinking of maybe working at the public library but was kind of scared of being bored out of my mind there. What do you do when working at a public library? Do you restock books all day long or sit at a desk and do nothing?
Go work at a University or Community College Library they’re fun – young people to talk with and meet all the time. I worked at a University library for 3 years, it was loads of fun. Mainly because all of us were the same age and we had access to all the media material in the library and it was a great opportunity to meet people.
Public library can be fun, depends on which city though. My neighbor worked front desk circulation at a public library in Hawaii for 5 years. 3 days a week she drove the "Bookmobile" which was the library on wheels that went out to the low income areas so kids had access to books. She loved it – her peers were all in their early 20′s too so it really depends on which public library you’re going to. You’ll do cataloging, reshelving, linking books, customer service, or story telling/event planning for the various monthly events that go on at your particular library.

Actually the library is far from boring. Do you have your MLS? If you do, then you can work as a Reference Librarian or a Youth Services Librarian. If you don’t have a college degree, but you have a high school degree you can possibly be a shelver (someone who puts books away) or maybe a circulation person who checks books/movies out to people. As a part-time Librarian (not b/c of the money, but b/c I LOVE it), I am busy helping people all the time. Also, you probably won’t have a desk unless you have a college degree and a Masters degree, at that.
