Please call your library despite what I say is my experience - your library is possibly different. My library allows volunteers as young as middle school but only in a special summer program. We don't want to be responsible for young people on their own at night in our neighborhood. It's a citywide policy. The summer program is not exactly "work experience" either, because we only have our teens mentor and direct younger kids in the summer reading program. We don't have them dust or shelve books, clean toilets, or anything a paid employee would be asked to do. Since the need is so focused/limited we don't accept everybody. Still, it is a good way to introduce yourself to a librarian (read that scholarship reference) and show them your skills (read that hire-ability) which can be extremely useful when you're 16/17 and need our help in taking yourself to the next level. All in all, I'd say it's been worthwhile to all of our past teen volunteers. If these restrictions work out for you, come on in. Please.<br><b>References : </b><br>Librarian.. As long as you don't consider yourself dyslexic in any way (sometime get owrd teh owrng way around) because that might not be handy for replacing book on the shelf in dewey. But 14 is the perfect age to start.
