How useful do you think libraries are to local communities? Are you concerned by budget cuts facing many branches? (How) do you utilize your local library?
I’m writing a paper and I need some input. Thanks!
Probably the website will have a much more prominent role with ebooks,etc.. However, the building itself is used for many community events like meetings, trivia nights, book talks/clubs, children’s events, study groups, and more. I think there will just be a lot more room for those sorts of things to happen.
a blockbuster but for old dvd’s not new ones. ha ha.

I read a lot of audio books and I get most of them from the public library. And music CDs. Occasionally a book.
I think we can forsee a lot more library materials being distributed online. My library has some audio books and music available for checkout on the web. The selection isn’t great but it’ll probably be expanded. I used to use King County library system in Washington state and they would mail materials that you reserved online and you could either return the stuff to the library or mail it back. I hope my library goes to that system, it’d be worth the postage cost.

Yes, I’m concerned about budget cuts, it sux. People in my community don’t utilize the library enough, it’s mostly for dvds and the internet. It’s sad- people aren’t reading as much it seems! I use it for everything, books, cds, audiobooks, dvds.

I really love libraries. But my school library is much better than my local one. It has the bestsellers and shorter waiting lists. And since I’m a total bookworm, I prefer that. But local libraries are best for research and really help me with homework, coz they have books (duh!) but also newspapers, magazines, audio books, internet etc. So I think they’ll be used more for research than reading, coz nowadays people in my area are not really into that, or they prefer to buy. But I can’t blame them, coz the waiting lists for the really good books are way to long!

All I know is right now my library card is more important than my credit card.

I believe libraries are, and will continue to be, important to local communities. The average person does not want to buy a book in order to read it. They would rather borrow the book. What better place to borrow a book than the library?
Also research is very important for libraries. You may be able to borrow a book from a friend, but how many have nonfiction books based on the specific research you may need to do? Contrary to popular belief, the internet still does not have everything on it. It’s usually hard to find primary sources on the internet. Not to mention, information on the internet is always accurate. Anyone can put information on the net and call it fact, but it takes more to have it published as a book.
I’ve seen many libraries with programs for young kids to get them into reading. The kids really enjoy story time.
I am concerned about budget cuts because I am working to get a Masters in Library Science. This is something that will affect me personally. I want to be able to provide my patrons with the best information, book availability, and variety as possible.
At my local library, I am constantly checking out books to read. I love the peaceful atmosphere in a library. They are a great place to get work done, or to just relax and unwind with a good book. I also use the library for research for college papers.
