I was looking at entertainment tonight a few days and they were talking about how this lady was arrested for not turning in her library books which cost only 107.00 in total. Can they (the library) do this kind of crap? If so that is so petty and ridiculous.
The lady who went to jail was only 20 years old.
Lol.
This Is Retarded!
Seriously.
Who Would Arrest Someone for Not Returning a Library Book?

Now I Suppose That’s What They’ll Do In Schools?

Yes, it’s possible for her to go to jail as a result of not turning in her books. HOWEVER, in most states, it’s probably because she was held in contemt of the court for failure to appear. If the library (or the state, if it’s a public library) sues her, and gets a judgment, and then files for post-judgment proceedings, to which she does not appear, the court will issue what (in maryland, at least) is knows as a body attachment. And the sherif of the police officer, or the constable, or whoever, will come and get her! It doesn’t have to be over a certain amount. It can be over as little as a penny…if there’s a court order, you better go to court!

I heard about a guy who stole hundreds of library books and was selling them on ebay and he went to jail but he had stolen thousands of dollars worth of books and other stuff.
This old lady seems to have stole the books because of the contents, censoring what the library can offer, according to http://www.boingboing.net/2008/08/28/judge-orders-woman-t.html
Judges have a lot of leeway to do as they please but jail for a couple of books is a bit harsh. Still, if everybody felt like censoring some books they don’t like in the library by taking them out and refusing to return them, they library would have to spend more money to buy the books again. Even if the person paid the value of the book, if it became common, they’d have to hire an extra person just to order books that had been stolen and nothing stops the people who did it from doing it again. I think the old lady is being made an example of as a warning for others.
