Any ideas about how to find homes for a large quantity of discarded library books, instead of recycling them?

After the library’s used book sale, there are many books of various types, cds, and videos remaining. Normally they are sent to be recycled, but it seems to me that these items could be useful to someone somewhere. Any ideas? Perhaps there is an organization that provides items like these to prisons or schools? I am particularly interested in saving the older hardcover books printed 50 years ago.

Many churches that do mission work will take your books and send them to other countries where kids can learn to read using them. That is what I do with my libraries discards.

Are you part of a liibrary list-serv? If so, send a message asking other librarians if they are interested in any of the titles. You could also have a silent auction; the friends of the library where I work have a silent auction every month and its usually very successful. You may also have some kind of special book sale during an important event at the library (like during a feature program for example).

Good luck! I hate to see good books with no home!
