I have been to the American Library Association Conventions. The book publishers are definitely courting librarians. Libraries are a big source of revenue for them.
References :
librarian

Library sales help consumer sales.....readers are notorious for spreading the word that they enjoyed a book. Library readers tell their friends , friends buy books...
If publishing companies relied strictly on retail sales, many books wouldn't sell at all...
i balk at buying certain authors, however borrowing a book from the library is free, so i might take a chance....if i like it i tell my friends, if i like it enough, i might buy it , even though i've already read it....
References :
While it may be technically true that publishing companies lose some sales due to libraries (perhaps on big bestsellers and whatnot), but a decent amount of publishing revenues actually come from library sales. When I worked for a publishing company, there was little better than getting a good review in Library Journal, because we wanted the sales it would generate from library systems. I also think that even publishing companies can see the good that comes from libraries being able to provide literature for people. They don't make enough of an impact to be a threat.
