Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

I’m trying to find a more reasonable public library for ebooks. New York library has ebooks I like but I live in Alabama and the cost would be 100.00 per year for a card – know any other web sites?

How many books can I borrow at Ottawa Public Library at one time?
Thanks

If you mean Ottawa Ontario I think it is unlimited. I’ve borrowed up to 15 books at one time, but I’m pretty sure I asked the women and she said unlimited. You could go to their website and get their phone number and call and ask them.

how many newspapers does a branch of the Austin Public Library carry?

for school please help!

Their catalog seems to indicate they have 58 titles in their whole system.

Plus, they have a subscription to an online database of newspapers.

Here’s a link to all of branch locations, hours, and phone numbers. Ask one of their librarians if you need further help. Librarians love to help answer questions.

Why did Palin want to ban books from the Wasilla Public Library?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

What were the reasons for Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s requests to ban books from her local public library?

She consulted a lawyer to see if some material which is inappropriate for children may be removed from public library, what exactly is wrong with that?
Children should be protected from the invasion of pornography, violence and racism.
This opinion by the way is shared by 76% of Americans.

Should it be OK for preschool children to accompany their parents at a public library computer?

Or does cooing, bubble blowing, garrulous questions to Mom (or Dad), fidgeting, whining and saying hello to everyone not disturb other public library patrons?

Heck NO!!!! I hate that.

Babies & toddlers belong at home. Children should only be allowed in libraries, restaurants, and stores when they can behave quietly, like little ladies & gentlemen.

The world is not their playground, nor is every "public place" a substitute for Chucky Cheese.

And, contrary to what someone else wrote, libraries should be quiet places where people can think, read and work without disturbance.

Does the public library have academic databases?

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

I want to know if the public library has access to academic databases like those found in a university.

Depends on the library. Larger, urban public libraries will have more academic resources than smaller, rural ones. Bottom line: call your library and ask what they have.

Even if your public library doesn’t have the databases, you may be able to use the resources of a nearby college or university, especially a state-supported college or university, although you may have to go on-campus to use them. Call and ask about their guest policies.

Is 14 too young to volunteer at a public library?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Our city has a site for youth volunteer work that can be done, and one of the opportunities I’m interested in is working at the public library.

Is 14 too young? Should I just give them a call?

No that’s wonderful. As long as you don’t consider yourself dyslexic in any way (sometime get owrd teh owrng way around) because that might not be handy for replacing book on the shelf in dewey.
But 14 is the perfect age to start. Make sure you have some neat clothes ready so you seem more mature but other than that, yeah, awesome!

Making Teens more aware of gay novel available at the public library?

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

I am working on an advertising campaign to get gay teens to be more aware of the gay novels available at the local public library. I am looking for ideas for posters or bookmarks.

For this Halloween, try the great young adult gay ghost novel, "Vintage", by Steve Berman.

A goth/emo boy thrown out by his parents for being gay discovers he has mediumistic powers, and encounters the ghost of a gay high school senior who was hit by an automobile 50 years ago.

The relationship between these two is intense; there is a story of young love; and the interaction between gay and lesbian high school students is well done.

Use that book, a book by Alex Sanchez, and other authors who write young adult gay novels as part of the poster with "We Support All Teens: Not Just Some of Them".

Can I go to the Public Library for free?

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Can I just go inside, sit down, and study for free?

I don’t want to pay a fee or anything like that. I don’t have a library card. If I walk in will they ask me if I have a library card or can I just go in, study for my test, and then walk out freely?

I’ve never been inside a Public Library before so can someone give me some tips?

It may be different in different places, but I’ve never seen a public library that you couldn’t go in and study for free, or use whatever books they have there. You need a library card to take books out, and in some places you need to live in that town or that county. Here in California, you can live anywhere in the state. I have several public library cards for towns around where I live.

But to just go in and use the books and tables, and maybe a computer, that’s free.
