Are you allowed to bring library books in your carry-on luggage?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

My sister says it will be confiscated. Is this true? I’m flying from Singapore to Dubai and it’s essential that I have my books with me so I don’t pass out of boredom but if there’s a risk, I’d rather not.

Dubai is a Moslem country so the type of books is critical to answer your question.

most novels will be OK other than sexual content. religious books are not OK.

Is there any library its books you can use by internet. I mean they send a book you apply for?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

I need some books that I can’t find them. Some years ago I typed some books which were supposed to be transferred on CDs for student’s use in U.S.A libraries. I want to know is there a bibrary which gives such a service to public through internet.

Public Library? Sure. Many public Libraries in the US participate in a service known as ILL (Library Interloan). Ever heard of Worldcat? (http://www.worldcat.org/)

This service, provided by OCLC, allows Interloan of materials from libraries across the nation. The catch of the service is: we’re not MAILING it you. Dirty secret: If we mail stuff between libraries, we can take advantage of special "library rates" in the USPS that makes it cost effective to send a book from Boise to Tallahasse or whatever.

If you’re talking ONLINE READABLE books… it’s coming soon. Google as an e-Books project, and you can also try looking up Project Gutenburg (http://www.gutenberg.org/), amongst many.

Teachers: how do you keep your classroom library books from being lost?

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Hello fellow teachers,

I’m faced with this problem every year, and it bothers me because I am a very organized person. My students borrow books from me and I end up closing out the year without as many books as I started with.

What do you do that works or doesn’t work? I’m interested in trying something new.

Thanks!

I’d use a library card system.
Create some kind of library
card and have the kid write
down his or her name and the date
they borrowed it. At least you will
know who is taking your books.
Then do an inventory weekly
so that you can keep a count
of your books. If you want, you
can elect a class librarian and he
or she can be responsible for checking
out books and doing an inventory..

How to describe how old library books smell?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

I need help for a project about the Library. How could you describe the old library book smell? (Using adjectives)

Everyone is describing unused books. Working in a public library, old westerns often smell like ashtrays, and romances smell like Miss Havisham or musty and old with a mild urinal cake smell. Children’s picture books can smell pretty ripe, a little like rotting grass clippings. New books smell a little sour depending on the glue used. It’s a shame books are no longer bound in leather. They actually smelled really nice and could keep a bit of their smell for 20 years. The overall smell of the library isn’t the books but the carpeting, however, and without carpeting, it’s the smell of recirculated air through dusty old filters and the burning smell of hot transformers from hundreds of florescent light fixtures.

My books, boxed at home, smell a bit like the tea I pack them in to try to keep out the bookworms, which it seems to accomplish, but I still need to find something that works on silverfish. Perhaps tea attracts them?

What books should a private library contain.?

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

I am thinking about adding a book collection in my study and am lost as to what types of books i should keep. I am not a big reader so my personal choices are limited to a dictionary and a few cooking books.

The types of books i am thinking of are reference and the odd history book, This library will of course be used by any guests i have over. Any ideas as to what i should keep?
I am not trying to impress anyone, the reason i am having a library built is so i can get into reading.

Why on earth would you want a private library when you don’t read?

Stick the few books you WILL enjoy on a shelf and fill your life with things you DO care about.

If you have money to throw about on a library you won’t use, give it to a real library, for thousands of people to use for decades to come.

Any ideas about how to find homes for a large quantity of discarded library books, instead of recycling them?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

After the library’s used book sale, there are many books of various types, cds, and videos remaining. Normally they are sent to be recycled, but it seems to me that these items could be useful to someone somewhere. Any ideas? Perhaps there is an organization that provides items like these to prisons or schools? I am particularly interested in saving the older hardcover books printed 50 years ago.

How to renew library books?

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

I’m abroad and I have left one of my library books at home and my library card. Is there anyway I can renew that book without the library card number?

Maybe. Some libraries will renew over the phone. Others have strict policies about not allowing renewals over the phone. However it will probably cost more to call to renew than to pay the fine when you come back.

how late would your brooklyn public library books be for your card to be suspended?

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

i have two books late for 33 days and the cost 16.50, would they suspend my card?

No. Or rather, I’ve gone that long before without suspension. but you should pay and return!

can you rent library books in a different county?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

I have a library card in the county I stay in most of the year, but during the summer I’m in an adjacent county in the same state. Could I get a library card and rent in this county?

Yes, you may get a library card for the library in your area.

Tell them you live there in the summer and where you live. It’s no big deal. They love readers. Just return the books before you leave town!

At the library , books on magic , why can I never find one , where do they disappear to?

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

I have a theory on this.
If you read my previous question on library books you will know what Im saying !

They’re written in invisible ink in the invisible book section, silly!!!
