How do online libraries detect whether you are copying?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

A lot of online libraries do not allow you to copy a book – you can only read it online. How do they detect whether you are copying or not? They say they only allow a limited amount of a book to be copied but how do they know? Is there a way to fool them? :D

rather then right clicking you should try ctrl + c

you could also try copying it 1 line at a time

Is there a Search engine that Will allow me to Search all the Libraries in America for a book?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Is there a search engine that will let me enter a book title and scan all the public libraries in the US to see if any of them have it? University libraries as well?

The Gutenberg Project has tens of thousands of books available for free download in pdf

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/main_page….

If, by chance, there is something you can’t find there… then one of my English professors gave me this site, which is basically the same thing and was put together by the University of Pennsylvania:

http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/lis…

All copyrighted material is illegal to download. Here are some sites that have non-copywrited material for reading:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/bro…
http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/ebooks/……
http://www.thefreelibrary.com/
http://www.baen.com/library/
http://www.ebooks3.com/
http://www.bookyards.com/
http://www.redbirdstudio.com/e_books/……
http://www.free-online-novels.com/……
http://www.bibliomania.com/1/frameset.ht…
http://www.starry.com/novel/authors.htm….
http://www.bygosh.com/features.htm……
http://www.bygosh.com/thebestnovels.htm….
http://www.bookspot.com/ask/
http://www.bookspot.com/

But I would try the Gutenberg Project first. I think their collection is more extensive.

Is it possible to sync an ipod from two different libraries?

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

My boyfriend got an iPod and I took it home to put some of my music on it. But when I went to put the music on it said that in order to put my music on I’d have to erase all of his. Because it was on two different libraries. Help please.

You have to set his ipod to "manually manage". On the left sidebar of itunes, click on the tab for his ipod. There should be a check box that says ‘manually manage music’ check the box and it should be fine.

How to represent "Teens and Libraries" in pictures?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

I’m doing a project and the theme is Teens and Libraries. How can I draw out teens and libraries? Thanks!

Skateboarders, on the front steps of the library? With open cell phones, IMing each other? Several books closed and ignored nearby?

How do libraries decide which books to keep and which ones to disregard?

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Libraries do not have all the books in the world, so how do they choose which books to keep, and which ones not to? Do they do it by popularity, is it first come, first kept or what?

I’m a librarian, myself. We’d like not to get rid of anything. Even if something hasn’t been checked out in a very long time you never know when the right person will come in looking for it. Also, librarians use several titles to look up information that their patrons have requested. And while these books may not get checked out by the public, they are incredibly useful to the library staff.

Having said that, there is a process that most libraries use called "weeding". Basically, the titles that are not as relative to the present time are removed from the shelves. An example would be a computer book from 1951. Also, of course, books in irreparable shape. But don’t get me wrong, a book is NOT discarded simply because of its age.

A lot of times a worn out book is the sign of a popular book. Therefore, much of the money set aside for buying books for the library is used to replace such titles.

I hope this helped you some.

How can I apply a type of a Philosophy to an educational article about libraries put on carts in schools?

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

I have to write a summary of an article called "Room for Readers" from the NEA magazine. It’s about how school libraries are losing ground and having to turn their libraries into carts, although research has proven that libraries and resourceful librarians improve student achievement. So the main thing I have to do, besides summarizing this article, is apply a philosophy, i.e. idealism, realism, etc., or an educational theory to this. Please help me out.

You have room here to examine the core philosophy of American Education and why it is no longer based on the principle of imparting knowledge, skill and talents to pupils.

That is to say, the purpose of education had been traditionally based on teaching students to read, write, and perform arithmetical functions in the early years, to make it possible for them to learn subjects such as history, geography, logic and science in later years, and to prepare them to participate in society.

Requiring that students subjugate themselves to the educational system, and to their teachers and administrators had been elementary to the entire process from the time of Aristotle’s Academy forward.

You might examine how the underpinnings of what used to be education have changed to the point that the whole system has passed the brink of failure and become something else entirely.

You might explore potential reasons why the educational system in the US no longer exhibits a compulsion to both teach, and inspire, children to read. You may even want to examine whether the institutions which fund education in this country and which receive funding for it, may feel that an educated populace is less than desirable.

How can I access shared itunes libraries behind my router?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

When I plug the network cable directly into my laptop, a good number of shared libraries appear that I can access. But when I plug that same network cable into my wireless router, and try to access those libraries via my wireless, they no longer appear. I would like to be able to access those libraries with my wireless internet connection. Help!

the router is acting as a firewall and blocking your connection.
Itunes cannot communicate from computer to computer if one is plugged into the wan port. the catch is, you might not be able to access the internet wirelessly if you plug your ethernet connection originally going to the laptop into something other than the wan port.
2 solutions for you:
1. take the cable out from the PC and plug that into the wan port on the router, then plug the PC into the router and connect to the laptop wirelessly.
2. Disable DHCP on the router and plug the cord into anything but the wan port, then remove and reinsert the power cable to the router. (router is an access point and routing functions are not used)
