Should congress limit access to the internet in public libraries?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Can and should the congress do that? what are some pros and cons. Are there any soulitions?
I understand why some people think it’s not congress Business but the goverment funds most of the public libraries.

No, for a number of reasons.

First of all, libraries are local entities. If anyone is going to decide to limit access in libraries, it should be the local community or the librarians in charge. Congress is supposed to address important national issues, not something as trivial as some guy looking at nudie pictures at the Podunk County Library.

Secondly, the Constitution does not grant Congress the power to establish library policies.

Finally, the 1st Amendment to the Constitution prohibits Congress from abridging the freedom of speech or the press.

The solution to the library issue is parental oversight. If a child is considered too young and vulnerable to view the internet unrestricted, they probably should not be in a library alone to begin with.

I want to work at my local library. But I have no references?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I’m a student in high school and I want to work at the library. But I have no references that aren’t my relatives, what do I do?

References? What? You’re a high school student – you’re going to be shelving books not guiding children through research reports.

Where I work you can’t even write references for fear that someone you recommend might commit fraud or murder and the city will be sued. We rely on your fluency in your application, your interview, a little test we’ve worked up that you have to pass,.. and, we also will only hire you as a "temporary, at will employee" so if you mess up we can fire you immediately rather than give you a two week notice.

Our application also has a spot for references, but it’s the same application used for the City Attorney and for them it’s important. Find people you know and ask them, but don’t spend a lot of time worrying about it.

Are you allowed to bring library books in your carry-on luggage?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

My sister says it will be confiscated. Is this true? I’m flying from Singapore to Dubai and it’s essential that I have my books with me so I don’t pass out of boredom but if there’s a risk, I’d rather not.

Dubai is a Moslem country so the type of books is critical to answer your question.

most novels will be OK other than sexual content. religious books are not OK.

Is there a software for creating your own subscription based online streaming library?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I’m looking to create a subscription based service that will allow subscribers to pay $XX a month to have access to certain audio and video files via streaming. Is there an "out of the box" software that will do this? Any ideas? Thanks.
I’m not just looking for a subscription service only… I was thinking it would be a software because it would need a nice interface. Maybe something similar to an "iTunes" look, as far as organization, presentation and search-ability. Hope that clarifies a bit more.

You can do that on paypal. you do not need a software for it.

How do I transfer songs from one Itunes library to another?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

- Ok, so I just bought a Macbook and I want my songs that are in my library that is currently on my PC onto my laptop. I would end up using the laptop library only if I can just get all of my old songs onto the laptop. PLEASE HELP!

If you can find your media player’s folder, look for your music and put the mp3 files or folder that contains them on a flash drive. (those go in your usb port) then just put the flash drive in your laptop and dl it.

What is the biggest online library?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

the local library doesn’t carry the book I want.

www.scribd.com doesn’t have it either

is there another online library?

Project Gutenberg hold a large library of classic literature.

Google Books offers several books, even some modern pieces online for free, or parts of the books.

There are free ebooks on manybooks.net that can be downloaded onto iPods and iPhones (This site is down at the moment but has several thousand titles available.)

http://ebookhood.com/ has some links which may also be helpful.

e-library is a very large collection of titles, but they are not free.

Scroll Motion’s Iceberg for iPhone just launched with over a million titles, some as low as 99 cents.

What are the best places to study besides the dorm common room and university library?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

*I’ve tried studying in my room, failed attempt; reason: bad roommate.
*”””Dorm common room; is full of smokers and loud rock music
*”””’University library; lack of attentive librarians which leads to noise and chaos overall and I only end up studying for 2 hours :(
Any ideas??
P.S. the public library in my region is currently being reconstructed to due to changes in the blueprints and whatnot.
Thanks in advance =)

In spring, summer, or fall you could always find a secluded corner of campus and study outside, but in winter you could study in a friend’s dorm if they let you or you could ask one of your professors if they know of another spot you could study. Sorry, but options are kind of limited when its cold out :(

How do online libraries detect whether you are copying?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

A lot of online libraries do not allow you to copy a book – you can only read it online. How do they detect whether you are copying or not? They say they only allow a limited amount of a book to be copied but how do they know? Is there a way to fool them? :D

rather then right clicking you should try ctrl + c

you could also try copying it 1 line at a time

can you borrow movies from a public library if you owe nyc public library money?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

was wondering. if i owe NYC public library about 11 dollars, can i still borrow movies?

I’m not entirely sure what NYC’s policy is on fees, but at the public library where I work patrons can check out material as long as their fines are below $10. I imagine NYC has a similar policy, likely at a similar fine limit. Give the library a call and they’ll let you know.
