Do public libraries have to pay a licence for their books?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

When you take a book out form the library and read it, you get to read the book for free so you would not need to buy a copy. That would mean that the author would lose money as you did not buy the book.

So when a library buys a stock of books, do they have to pay a licence or subscription to the books authors to make up for the lost money?

There is such a thing as Public Lending Right (PLR) . It is the right for authors to receive payment under PLR legislation for the loans of their books by public libraries.

Why do you use this answer service rather than your local library’s reference librarian?

A lot of libraries have email and/or IM help, though, so you can get help without actually going to the library. You can also call them on the phone. As a library science student, I wanted to chime in that not all of us fit the stereotype of librarians – we’re helpful and friendly!

You turn in library books and they say they don’t have it?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

I turned in library books about a month ago, and they say that they don’t have it. I turned it in through a book drop, could it have been lost through the transfering? Please help, or else I have to pay for it! I have looked through my locker and everything and I am POSITIVE I turned it in. My friends even said I did because they were there with me. HELP WHAT DO I DO!

I had this happen to me once. I called the library and explained that I turned it in and gave them the date. Of course, when they checked their computer, it said it was still missing. I asked them to check the shelf, because even with multiple copies of the same book, each book has a unique copy number code and it is recorded when one checks it out. They checked on the shelf and sure enough, it was in the library.

If they refuse to check on the shelf, then you can either dispute the claim and the library will remove it from your file and mark it as lost…

or… you can go down to the library yourself and find the book on the shelf, bring it up to the help desk and explain. If you do this, just make sure an employee is with you before you look for the book so they don’t accuse you of re-shelving it yourself to avoid a fine.

How to build a library website? Joomla? Software?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

At work, we have a small library that I would like to catalogue and put on the internet for others to see and loan. I am familiar with Joomla, so it would be great if there is a plugin for this. If not, I can work my way around html and css but php and mysql forget it.

I have a domain and hosting package already. Just need to find a open source system for making a library online.

Thanks!!

Looks like somebody already did all the work for you. There is a pro version, too, which is not free, you will have to compare the two to see which one better suits your needs.

What are the cross streets for the main Public Library in midtown Manhattan?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

careful when answering, I am not looking for the address

What most people think of as the "main branch" is a research facility, not a lending library, but it’s on the corner of 5th Avenue, between West 42nd Street and West 40th Street in midtown Manhattan.

How is a Library different from limewire or other file sharing programs?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

I am a complete supporter of Library’s, but I was wondering, does giving Library’s federal support exempt them from copyright?

Libraries lend physical objects, after they purchase them. If you check out a book, you have a physical object. It cannot be loaned to another person until you return it. With digital copies, millions of people can copy and download one file at the same time.

online library where you can read full books for free?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

I love to read and reading at home is most convinient because my mom doesn’t have time to take me to the library. where is a online library where i can read the whole book for free?

You can read over 30,000 books written before 1923 on Gutenberg. But there is no such thing as a online library where you can read any book you want. After January 1, 1923, the author has to AGREE to give you the book for free. Most authors can’t afford to.

Cory Doctorow is one of the few authors I know of that will allow you to read his books for free.

How could a computerization project go bad unless the organization’s libraries were trashed?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

The organization undoubtedly would possess, or would have possessed, libraries of textbooks documenting how development, test, and evaluation, has been successfully performed for numerous previous projects.

Incompetence
sabotage
fraud
Past performance is not indicative of future results.
Or the basic concept may have been flawed from its inception so no amount of tweaking could result in success.
Government may have micromanaged it to death.

None of these need take libraries into account and none require libraries being trashed.
