Should religious text be banned from public school libraries?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Should books such as the Bible, Koran, Torah, Book of Satan, etc. be banned from public school libraries since there is a law that states that church and state should be separated? Why or why not? Even more importantly, should these texts be allowed to be used as references in school assignments (there is a gray area in here, like could these books be used for historical documentation [i.e. lists of the kings found in the bible]).

Seperation of church and state only means that the gvt cant have a state sponsored religion and that gvt cant interfere in religious practices and beliefs too much.
It has nothing to do with using religious references or learning about religion in schools

In this global society we live in we should be teaching kids about diff religions and how they affect the diff societies around the world.

How much would a 100 year old reference book be worth?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

How much would a 100 year old reference book called "The Practical Reference Library" published by The Dixon-Hanson Company in 1910 be worth? The hard cover has been a little worn but the pages are in good shape. I have two volumes of the book that were given to me. Or is there anywhere online I can find to calculate the value of the book?

Probably not a lot. There would have been lots printed. However try this site which sells "out of print" books, see if there are any for sale and if so what the asking price is. www.abebooks.com
(personally I do not buy from them any more as they didn’t help when I had a bad seller).

I hear that the American Library Association has a list of the 10 most banned library books. What are they?

It is interesting to know what current books are asked to be banned from public libraries. I hear there is controversy about the HARRY POTTER books. What others are there; particularly current titles?

Can you help me find an online school for library science?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Hi! I am trying to pursue a master’s in library science and am having a hard time finding a good program online. I am not interested in U of Phoenix or any other online college in that category. These colleges are often not "respected," so they will be a waste of time and money. I am looking for an accredited college that offers this program online and does not charge in-state tuition (unless it is VA). If you have any beneficial information, I will be very grateful!

I advise you not to choose online. In most cases, people hiring a librarian want to hire someone who has experience dealing with people. Dealing with computers, chat, and text messaging s*h*o*u*l*d be secondary. But then, maybe you have a rich life experience and this is a second career?

In either case visit http://www.vla.org/educ-support.html

I also read that "The University of North Texas is actually quite a popular choice (for online study). Texas Woman’s University also has an online program."

Both of those are on the Virginia educational support list on the above link.

What type of "USB Removable Disk Device" can I use to save things I downloaded on a public library computer?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I sometimes use a computer at a public library. The computers at the library are not set up to let you record things onto a CD-ROM. You can only save things on a 3.5" diskette or a "USB Removable Disk Device". I don’t know what a "USB Removable Disk Device" is. Can someone tell me what it is and where I can purchase one?
