How Long Until Public Libraries Receive Just Released Books?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

There’s several books that have just come out on the bookshelves that I want to get…but I possess a combination of skeptism and penny-pinching habits which result in myself being a public library fiend. I want to know how long does it take a public library to start having a book on their shelves after it just got released to bookstores?
Anyone know?

There is no set rule. The Harry Potter books through Scholastic got to us days in advance of their release dates so we could process them and check them out at 12:01 AM if we wanted to have a special party. Other publishers want to keep them from libraries for a month or two after we order them so people will want to buy them in stores. In doing so regularly though, they risk libraries not going through them to buy books on other subjects, so they only dare try it with a few bestsellers.

Finally, there is receiving the book and then there is the time to process it. Most libraries will have a week or two backlog although there are ways around it – like getting the bookseller to process it before shipment, but that’s pricey. To estimate this delay, look at how well your city supports its library – long lines, worn carpet, bathroom graffiti and it might take your library longer than two weeks.

do i need a library card to use a reference library?

In a public library, you only need a card to check books out. You can read all you wish while you are there.

Will I have to pay for library books that have been lost for 14 years?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

I checked out 2 library books when I was 12 and I lost them, and I never paid for them. 14 years later, I want to re-join my local library. Will they want me to pay for these lost books (I do plan on paying for them)? Will they refuse my application because of them? Any information will be helpful.

You’ll probably have to pay at least something, if they still have it documented, which I can’t say for sure. But it depends on the library’s policies for how much you’ll have to pay.

How many inches does the main library at Indiana University sink each year?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

The Main Library at Indiana University sinks over an inch every year because when it was built, engineers failed to take into account the weight of all the books that would occupy the building.

What percentage of people visit a library without a particular book in mind?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

I had a debate at work at whether we should stock the library depending on books that people request or stock it independent of requests. I have a hunch that a majority of the people who visit libraries BROWSE through the available books and pick the ones that they find interesting. The number of people who walk into a library with one or books in mind might be a minority.

Are there any surveys or statistics available on this?

Less than before. Probably 10% now. Most people go to the library to either use the restroom, read the newspaper/magazines, or use the Internet.

Can anyone help me find a library website? Like one that will let you few books and journals online?

I live overseas and am working on my Master’s. I have to write scientific papers (Environmental Science Master’s) but can only have a few internet resources. Is there a library online? Like one you can subscribe to (I’m ok with paying a membership) and few books online?

You need to check with the university where you are getting your degree. These libraries do exist, but usually they are accessed through high schools and universities (Kansas for example has one). Good luck!

What’s the point of a university library if you have to buy books anyway?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

If you need to buy all the recommended textbooks what’s the point of a library with millions of books?

You’d rather buy your own copy of every book in the library?

not me, I want a library to hold all those books that I only need to refer to one time. Especially the really expensive books. I’d like them to subscribe to all of those academic journals I need to look at too – I can’t afford that myself.
